Whynter ARC-13S

I've owned and used several portable air conditioners over the years and I'm truly surprised at the speed of innovation over the last several years. Now it has come to a point where portable units have moved beyond your functional clunky beige contraption to something that has been designed to subtly blend into the surroundings. After deciding between this and a Delonghi (yes, I've finally arrived now that I can afford high-end appliances!) I decided to go with the more compact unit that was at a more affordable price point. I've been using this for about a month now and have been completely satisfied with nearly all aspects. One little gripe that I have, is the absence of handles on the side, it definitely is heavy too. It does however churn out very very cold air, look extremely slick and is a snap to use. The remote control has a myriad of functions that I will eventually use one day but for now, I just need the icey relief from a hot spring day.

Poor Customer Service - Gary Frost - Portland, OR
The machine has a poor design and is not able to exhaust water correctly from condensation. The drain for the machine is about 1 1/2" from the floor so it is not easy to set up a full time drain. I was told by the Whynter that maybe it was, "to humid to work in Portland, Oregon!" I guess this means that the unit sold in the Central, East Coast Northwest and Southern US will not work at all in those humid places!

I wanted to return the unit. They first wanted me to pay all of the shipping. Then they changed their minds. Since the box was damaged they said it would be OK to pack in a sturdy box to return. As a severely disabled person I was not able to do that and they would not pay to have the product picked up. I had not choice but to keep it and see if I could make it work. My care giver did put it on a stand so that it would drain continuously, but that is ridiculous for a product that is supposed to work as is!

The cooling was useless at first, but has improved. In reality I had to make the product work myself when it should have worked out of the box.

I am also afraid that this time AMAZON did not provide very good customer support either. That really disappointed me a lot!

I see now that Target is selling the product. I hope they tried it out in Minneapolis where their HQ is located. If what they had was anything like I received they should not be selling this product.

A good portable unit at a good price - Charlie Fultz - New Market, VA
I was skeptical getting a portable a/c unit after the first one I purchased from a competitor didn't work out of the box. But I was pleasantly surprised at how well the unit has run and how little it has affected our electric bill. The only issue I had was that I needed to empty water out of the unit the first two days. Once I spoke to a CSR, all problems were addressed and all is still well with the unit. I only use it about 7 hours a day tops, but again I am very pleased to date....
